Who Do Americans Blame for the Shutdown? The Results Are In.

The first polling results post-government shutdown are coming in, and political observers will see for the first time who Americans blame for the three-day stoppage of federal funding from January 20 through January 22.

NBC News reported on Tuesday that a plurality of voters blame Democrats in Congress:

About 4 in 10 people, or 39 percent, think Democrats in Congress are responsible for the shutdown, which began early Saturday morning after Senate Democrats, citing insufficient progress on negotiations over the fate of young immigrants covered by the DACA program, withheld their support for a deal.

Coming in just below Democrats is President Trump who, blameless or not, some feel won the shutdown fight.

A similar share, 38 percent, blamed Trump for the shutdown.

Who isn’t seeing blame, at least compared to Democrats and Trump? Congressional Republicans, who took the blame for the 2013 shutdown.

Just under 2 in 10 (18 percent) said Republicans in Congress were to blame.

If midterm voters remember the shutdown in 2018, this poll would suggest that Democrats’ efforts to retake majorities in the House and the Senate may be in peril.
