Who’s Winning the 2018 Donation Race Among 2020 Contenders?

There’s a quiet horse race taking place among potential Democratic presidential candidates, and while the national media’s attention is fixated on who will come out on top in 2018 races, a few are starting to keep close tabs on this crop of 2020 candidates.

To gain political favor among Democrats across the country, potential 2020 candidates are donating massive amounts of cash from their leadership PACs to these 2018 Democrats.

Who’s donating? It’s the names most would expect: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

But the list also includes at least one lesser-discussed candidate, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and the potential candidate who could shake up the race significantly, former Vice President Joe Biden.

Here’s how The Hill’s Reid Epstein breaks down the 2018 donation race among 2020 Democrats:

The least surprising name on this list is also the name at the top of the giving list: Warren. Earlier this year, Warren reportedly donated $265,000 to the Democratic National Committee and all 50 state Democratic parties. It’s her way of buttering up these people who will be crucial to her potential success at nabbing her party’s nomination in 2020.

But among the voters themselves, Warren trails Biden. A poll released last month of Iowa caucus-goers found 37 percent said they backed Biden, to just 16 percent for Warren. Sanders was next at 12 percent, and Harris and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) followed with 10 and eight percent, respectively.

There’s a long way to go until the Democrats’ convention in July 2020, but the potential contenders are already laying the groundwork now.
