Why Was Bernie Aide in Contact With Paul Manafort?

Special Counsel Robert Mueller introduced evidence against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort on Thursday, and a number of exhibits stand out. Among the financial and communications records, multiple instances of correspondence with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) strategist Tad Devine will help Mueller attempt to convict Manafort.

Mueller charged Manafort with crimes such as failing to register as a foreign agent and money-laundering in late 2017. Most of the charges stem from his time working on behalf of the Ukrainian government.

According to The Washington Post, Manafort and Devine worked for pro-Russia Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych at the same time:

There will also be email communication between Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, and Tad Devine, a Democratic consultant who worked for the same Ukrainian politician.

It is the work Manafort did for Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovychand his political party that is at the center of the criminal charges against him in both Alexandria and D.C. federal court.

According to The New York Post, the email exchanges between the two lasted until early 2014, and Devine joined Sanders later that year ahead of his presidential run.
