Will Lasers – Yes, Lasers – Upend U.S.-China Efforts on Trade and North Korea?

The U.S. and China are currently engaged on two major issues with global implications, and a few lasers may throw a wrench into the negotiations.

NBC News has details on the alleged use of lasers at a Chinese military base in Djibouti, Africa, which has injured at least two American pilots.

U.S. forces fighting terror in the Horn of Africa are facing a new threat — lasers fired from the new Chinese military base in Djibouti.

Two American fliers have already been injured, prompting the State Department to lodge a formal protest with Beijing and the military to warn pilots to exercise caution “due to lasers being directed at U.S. aircraft on a small number of separate occasions over the last few weeks.”

NBC News also noted that China is “new to the neighborhood”; their Djibouti military base, which opened in July 2017, is “the first overseas Chinese military support operation.”

A spat over military interference could put U.S.-China talks on two major issues at risk. Those two issues are trade and North Korea-South Korea peace talks.

Trade talks are tense, if a Wall Street Journal report on U.S. trade demands of China, released Friday, is any indicator. And the situation with the Koreas is, of course, sensitive and ongoing. Will a military fight, even a small one, put negotiations on both global issues at risk?
