Will McCaskill Oppose Pompeo for State?

Many recent secretaries of state have been approved by the U.S. Senate on a near-universal basis. Will Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) help Democrats engage in unprecedented blocking of Mike Pompeo?

Will McCaskill Oppose Pompeo for State?

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will vote on Mike Pompeo’s nomination to be secretary of state on Monday. Whether the committee gives Pompeo a thumbs up or a thumbs down, he’s likely to move to the full U.S. Senate after the committee vote.

At that point, vulnerable Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) will have a decision to make: approve Pompeo, since recent (Bush and Obama) secretaries of state have received near-universal approval, or vote to torpedo another Trump secretary of state and risk voter wrath in November (and tit-for-tat retribution when another Democrat becomes president)?

McCaskill, of course, voted against Rex Tillerson, President Trump’s first pick to be secretary of state.

But, The Wall Street Journal editorial board points out recent secretaries of state have received near-unanimous approval in the Senate. Recent obstruction of secretary of state nominees is a new phenomenon.

Defeating a Secretary of State nominee would be extraordinary. George W. Bush’s first nominee, Colin Powell, was confirmed by unanimous voice vote, and his second, Condoleezza Rice, by 85-13. Hillary Clinton received two no votes and John Kerry only three. Every Secretary of State nominee since 1925 has been reported out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee favorably.

McCaskill has a decision to make. Missouri voters will be watching, as they have to decide McCaskill’s political fate in a contested election this November.
