Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO) still has several months left in his last term leading the state of Colorado, but that is not stopping him from casting his eyes upward, at a presidential run in 2020.

The Durango Herald reported that Hickenlooper said, at an event in Washington, D.C., that he may come to a decision “this summer.”

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper appeared to come closer than he has to date in suggesting he might seek the presidency after an awards event Tuesday in the nation’s capital.

“At some time I want to sit down and spend some time to think about it,” Hickenlooper told Colorado Politics.

However, he said it was too soon for his decision.

“Not yet,” the Democrat said. “I got to focus on the stuff we’re doing now.”

He added, “Maybe this summer.”

This may raise some eyebrows in D.C. Hickenlooper would be the first Democratic candidate with a true national profile.

It also may raise eyebrows back home in Hickenlooper’s Colorado. The two-term governor just told Rolling Stone that he and his Cabinet “[get] distracted” when Hickenlooper starts “looking at the future.”

The moment I start looking back and think, “Well, I’m glad I did that, and I’m glad I did that,” you know, then I get distracted. If I start looking at the future, you know, what’s next? I get distracted, my cabinet gets distracted. You know, part of the excitement of being a governor is you get to attract all of these talented people, and you got a certain number of days, and on my cell phone I’ve got a little calendar, and I can tell you, because I looked at it this morning, 281 days left in this administration. All of my cabinet have that, we all have our work plans, how much we’re going to get done every few weeks.

Is Hickenlooper working on being governor of Colorado, or the next president? Time will tell, but some Coloradans may be asking the same question.
