Though she’s not formally a presidential candidate, she may well be by the time she arrives in the Palmetto State at the end of the month.

With 2020 Announcement Looming, Harris Heads to South Carolina

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is all but certainly running for president. She released a new book last week, hit both coasts on a media tour to promote it, and now she’s making plans to visit early primary states on the 2020 presidential primary calendar.

Harris is heading to South Carolina, according to a report from Politico, to attend the 37th annual Pink Ice Gala in Columbia.

The event is hosted by the Gamma Nu Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. — as an undergraduate student at Howard University, Harris pledged AKA, and remains a popular figure in the sorority.

Last week, during promotion for her book, “The Truths We Hold,” Harris told “The Late Show’s” Stephen Colbert that she “might” run for president. Meanwhile, her hometown paper reporter that Harris’s still-unannounced presidential campaign would likely have an east coast headquarters in addition to an office in the San Francisco Bay area. Some have speculated that the east coast HQ might be in Baltimore, Maryland.

Many anticipate Harris will announce this upcoming weekend, on or around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. She’s expected to make the announcement in her birthplace, Oakland, California.

If she does choose this weekend to jump in the race, she may have company. Her Senate colleague, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), is also expected to make it official when she heads to Iowa this weekend.

Harris fares relatively well in national polling but most often badly trails better known potential candidates, such as former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). In a CNN poll conducted last month, Harris trailed only Biden, Sanders, and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), who topped the list.
