The possibility of a meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un gained serious momentum on Wednesday, after the president confirmed The Washington Post‘s reporting that CIA Director Mike Pompeo met with Kim over Easter weekend.

“Mike Pompeo met with Kim Jong Un in North Korea last week,” Trump tweeted. “Meeting went very smoothly and a good relationship was formed.”

The Post had first reported on the meeting, “the highest-level meeting between the two countries since 2000, when then-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright met with Kim Jong Il.”

Trump now believes a meeting will take place “by early June,” according to The Associated Press.

Of course, there are a number of obstacles that could prevent a meeting from ever occurring. The insults traded between Trump and Kim last year could always return, squashing a proposed meeting. North Korea could start testing nuclear weapons again, or the U.S. could make moves with South Korea or Japan that upset the North.

Even if no diplomatic disasters occur between now and June, the proposed meeting remains a major logistical hurdle. But the Pompeo meeting with Kim makes it all the more likely the leaders of the U.S. and North Korea will meet soon.
