WSJ: McCaskill, Schumer Targeting Hawley’s Donors in Ads

Candidates regularly use campaign ads to attack each other, often holding nothing back. But it is rare to see a candidate use ads to attack private citizens simply for supporting their opponent.

That’s exactly what Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), with the backing of Chuck Schumer’s allies, is doing, according to a new column from The Wall Street Journal‘s Kimberly Strassel.

Strassel writes that McCaskill and Schumer have teamed up to attack private citizen David Humphreys for his donations to McCaskill’s Republican opponent, Attorney General Josh Hawley:

Indeed, they are attacking a private citizen and donor, David Humphreys. Back in March, Chuck Schumer’s Senate Majority PAC began plowing millions into attacks on the businessman, who donated to Mr. Hawley’s campaign for attorney general. The pattern is the same: An ad makes a malicious accusation against Mr. Humphreys, then sidles over to tar Mr. Hawley with guilt by association. Just how invested are they in this strategy? Since airing their first spot, 70% of Democratic ads—amounting to $4.7 million—have been focused on Mr. Humphreys.

McCaskill’s failure to hit Hawley with any sustained punches throughout the campaign, while she herself is buried under negative stories, has clearly inspired desperate efforts on the Democratic side.
