The owner, chairman, and CEO of WWE, Vince McMahon, held a press conference Thursday announcing the re-launch of the XFL and said that players in the new football league would be required to stand for the national anthem.

A reporter asked McMahon to clarify if it would be in the rules of the XFL that players stand for the national anthem.

“As far as the national anthem is concerned, I think, again, it’s a time-honored tradition to stand for the national anthem and appreciate the national anthem with any sport here in America or for that matter, any country they do that. So I think it would appropriate to do that,” McMahon responded.

The NFL found itself embroiled in controversy this year when players kneeled during the national anthem. The NFL had no rule that prohibited players from kneeling during the national anthem, and the protest resulted in sponsors pulling their money from the NFL, low attendance at stadiums, and decreased viewership in 2017.
