Young Head of State Draws ‘Red Line’ on Syria, Over Chemical Weapons

French President Emmanuel Macron has “set” and “reaffirm[ed]” a “red line” in Syria, promising action from France if the Assad regime uses chemical weapons.

Axios reported:

France’s President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that France would retaliate against the Syrian regime if he had proof that civilians were being attacked with chemical weapons, Reuters reports.

“On chemical weapons, I set a red line and I reaffirm that red line…If we have proven evidence that chemical weapons proscribed in treaties are used, we will strike the place where they are made.”

Sound familiar? That’s because it is. President Obama, another young, charismatic, western head of state, also set a red line on Syria, over the country’s use of chemical weapons. Obama drew his red line in 2012.

Of course, Obama didn’t follow through on the red line, which became one of the biggest foreign policy blunders of his presidency and ‘haunted‘ candidate Hillary Clinton during her presidential run years later.

Time will tell if Macron will learn from Obama’s mistakes, and actually follow through if the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad (again) crosses that line.
