YouTube’s Solution to Combat Fake News Videos Involves Wikipedia… Really.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival a potential “solution” to combating conspiracy theory videos that have plagued the online video platform.

According to Wojcicki, YouTube videos will include links to various Wikipedia pages to better inform viewers about the topic of the video they are watching.

“If there is an important news event, we want to be delivering the right information,” Wojcicki said on Tuesday. She qualified that by saying, “We are not a news organization.”

The problem with this is “solution,” is that “Wikipedia is a crowdsourced digital encyclopedia,” meaning that anyone can make edits, “and editors sometimes engage in fierce partisan battles over divisive topics.”

In 2016, a BBC investigation found that there have been millions of fake Wikipedia entries since the website launched in 2001.

BBC reported:

The online encyclopaedia’s “anyone can edit” philosophy means plenty of mischievous, made-up information has found its way on to the site.

While thousands of volunteer editors, or Wikipedians, try to ensure accuracy and properly cited information, many of these fake facts have fallen through the cracks and been taken as gospel by everyone from university academics to major newspapers and broadcasters.

As for YouTube’s decision to use Wikipedia, BuzzFeed News reported:

“The spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that the new information from Wikipedia, which the company has dubbed “information cues,” is not meant to be seen as a full-scale solution to a complex problem. Instead, the company suggested that this is just a first small step in a series of announcements to come over the next year about the company’s efforts to provide more information about videos on its platform.”

If YouTube’s solution to combatting “fake news” is directing viewers to possibly even more misinformation, they need to come up with a better solution.
